GRIL,WOMAN,OTHER by Bernardine Evaristo

A deeply impactful collection of stories on the identity, sexuality and abuse of women of colour in Britain over the centuries.
Most of the stories revolve around one central theme: confronting racism and finding their place in such a society.
At the beginning I was disturbed by the sentence structure, not to mention the unconventional page breaks, commas and paragraphs but as I kept reading I realised that this novel sets out to be extraordinary and disruptive in literally all possible ways.
It was truly refreshing to have these stories centred on black women in a place where they’ve been silenced for too long.

“Gender is one of the biggest lies of our civilization”

“Be a person with knowledge not just opinions”
